Advanced Functional Lab Testing

Understanding the Body Beneath the Symptoms

At Functional Healing: The Mind-Body Connection, we believe symptoms are messages from the body — not random events.

Many individuals arrive feeling frustrated. They may be eating better, exercising, and trying different approaches, yet still struggle with fatigue, digestive discomfort, hormone shifts, weight resistance, poor sleep, or inflammation.

Often, the missing piece is deeper insight into how the body is functioning internally.

This is where advanced functional lab testing can provide clarity.

Rather than guessing, these tests allow us to explore what may be influencing digestion, hormone balance, metabolism, immune function, and overall well-being. They help uncover healing opportunities that may not always appear on conventional lab work.

In my practice, I use several advanced functional assessments to better understand what your body may be communicating.

Two of the most frequently used tests are the GI-MAP Gut Health Test and the DUTCH Hormone Test, though additional testing may also be recommended depending on your unique health picture.

Functional testing is always used thoughtfully and in the context of your complete health history, lifestyle, and symptoms.

GI-MAP Gut Health Test

A Comprehensive Look at the Gut Microbiome

The GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is an advanced stool test that evaluates the health of the gut microbiome and digestive environment.

The gut plays a central role in overall health. It influences digestion, nutrient absorption, immune activity, hormone balance, inflammation levels, and even brain function.

When the gut environment becomes imbalanced, symptoms can appear in many different ways.

The GI-MAP evaluates:

  • Beneficial bacteria that support digestive health
  • Opportunistic bacteria and microbial imbalances
  • Yeast and fungal overgrowth
  • Parasites and pathogens
  • Digestive enzyme production
  • Inflammatory markers
  • Gut immune activity
  • Intestinal barrier integrity

GI-MAP testing may be helpful for individuals experiencing:

  • Bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort
  • IBS or irregular bowel movements
  • Acid reflux
  • Food sensitivities
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Skin concerns
  • Brain fog
  • Immune challenges
  • Inflammatory conditions

By understanding the digestive ecosystem, we can develop a targeted nutrition and lifestyle strategy to support microbial balance, digestive function, and overall resilience.

DUTCH Hormone Test

A Deeper Understanding of Hormone Patterns

The DUTCH Test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) provides an in-depth look at hormone production, metabolism, and daily hormone rhythms.

Hormones influence nearly every system in the body — including energy, sleep, metabolism, mood, reproductive health, and cognitive function.

Unlike standard blood tests, the DUTCH test evaluates how hormones are produced, how they are broken down, and how they fluctuate throughout the day.

The DUTCH Test evaluates:

  • Estrogen levels and estrogen metabolism pathways
  • Progesterone balance
  • Testosterone and androgen activity
  • Cortisol patterns throughout the day
  • DHEA and adrenal function
  • Melatonin production

DUTCH testing may provide valuable insight for individuals experiencing:

  • Fatigue or burnout
  • Poor sleep
  • Weight resistance
  • Mood changes or anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Perimenopause or menopause transitions
  • Low libido
  • Brain fog

Understanding these patterns allows us to build a strategic plan that supports hormone balance naturally through nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted support.

Additional Functional Testing

Every health story is unique. While the GI-MAP and DUTCH Hormone Test are two of the most frequently used assessments in my practice, additional functional testing may sometimes be recommended depending on your symptoms, history, and health goals.

These tools help provide a more complete picture of how the body is functioning, allowing us to create a personalized strategy that supports digestion, hormone balance, metabolism, and overall well-being.

Testing is never used as a one-size-fits-all approach. Recommendations are always made thoughtfully based on your individual health picture.

A Personalized Approach to Functional Healing

Lab testing is never interpreted in isolation.

Every result is reviewed alongside your symptoms, health history, lifestyle habits, and goals to create a personalized strategy that supports your body’s ability to restore balance.

Your plan may include:

  • personalized nutrition guidance
  • digestive and metabolic support
  • lifestyle strategies for stress and sleep
  • movement and recovery recommendations
  • targeted supplementation when appropriate

The goal is not simply to review lab numbers — but to understand what your body is communicating and help guide it toward greater balance.
