Beyond Awareness: Investing in the One Thing We Often Overlook

Last week, I shared why this series is so personal to me. I also left you with a simple thought: our health deserves our attention long before it asks for it.

This week, I’d like to build on that idea by asking you a simple question.

What are you investing in right now?

Most of us are investing in something. We invest in our homes, our careers, our children’s futures, retirement accounts, vacations, and the lives we’re working so hard to build. We spend years planning for tomorrow because we want the future to be filled with experiences, memories, and time with the people we love.

Those are all worthwhile investments.

But as I reflect on the conversations I have with clients every day, I’ve noticed something.

Many of us spend far more time planning for our future than preparing ourselves to enjoy it.

We often assume there will be time later.

We’ll start eating better after the holidays.

We’ll begin exercising when work slows down.

We’ll make the appointment after vacation.

We’ll focus on ourselves once everyone else is taken care of.

The challenge is that “later” has a way of becoming months—and sometimes even years.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned, both personally and professionally, is that health isn’t something we should place on the back burner until we have more time. It’s one of the few investments that has the potential to influence every other part of our lives.

Think about it for a moment.

What good is the dream vacation if you don’t have the energy to enjoy it? What does retirement look like if your health limits the things you’ve spent a lifetime looking forward to? How different would life feel if you woke up each morning with more energy, slept more soundly, moved without discomfort, or simply felt better in your own body?

After all, isn’t that what we’ve been working so hard for?

These aren’t questions we often ask ourselves while we’re busy building our lives.

Yet they’re questions worth asking.

As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I believe our health is shaped by the choices we make every day—many of which seem small in the moment but become significant over time.

Choosing foods that nourish our bodies.

Prioritizing sleep instead of accepting exhaustion as normal.

Managing stress instead of simply pushing through it.

Moving our bodies because we value what they do for us, not because we’re trying to punish them.

Scheduling preventive appointments instead of putting them off for another year.

None of these choices is glamorous.

None provides an overnight transformation.

But together, they create something incredibly valuable: a foundation that supports the life we’re working so hard to build.

I often remind clients that our health is one of the few investments that we carry with us every single day. Unlike a house, a retirement account, or a new car, we don’t get to set it aside and come back to it later. It travels with us through every season of life.

That’s why I believe it deserves to be part of the conversation—not after something goes wrong, but while we still have the opportunity to influence it.

This week, I encourage you to ask yourself one question:

Am I investing in my health with the same intention that I invest in the rest of my future?

Sometimes the most valuable investment we’ll ever make isn’t measured in dollars.

It’s measured in the quality of the life we’re able to live.

And to me, that’s an investment worth making.
