Signs Your Gut May Be Out of Balance

When my boys were growing up, farting was always a big joke in our house. There was a lot of laughing, a lot of blaming each other, and a lot of noise. At the time it was just funny and part of raising boys. But looking back now, I think about it a little differently. Gas, bloating, reflux, and constipation are actually some of the body’s ways of communicating that something in the digestive system may not be working the way it should.

Many digestive symptoms are normalized or brushed off as just part of life. People often say things like, “I just have a sensitive stomach,” or “I’ve always been constipated,” or “I can’t eat that because I’ll be bloated for two days.” These symptoms are common, but they are not necessarily normal. In many cases, they are signals from the gut that something may be out of balance.

Last week, we talked about how the digestive system works and how digestion involves much more than just the stomach. When digestion is working well, the body is better able to break down food, absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and support energy and hormone balance. When digestion is not working well, symptoms may appear not only in the digestive system, but throughout the entire body.

Common Digestive Signs

Some of the more obvious signs that the gut may be out of balance include:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Reflux or heartburn
  • Food sensitivities
  • Irregular bowel movements

Signs That May Not Seem Gut Related

Gut health may also influence symptoms that don’t seem related to digestion at all, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Skin issues
  • Joint discomfort
  • Anxiety or mood changes
  • Frequent illness
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Poor sleep

The gut plays a role in inflammation, nutrient absorption, the immune system, hormone balance, and metabolism. When the gut is not functioning well, it can influence many systems throughout the body.

Foundations That Support Gut Health

Before supplements or complicated protocols, I often start with the foundations that support digestion and overall health:

  • Eat real, whole foods
  • Include protein with meals
  • Drink enough water
  • Chew food thoroughly
  • Avoid constant snacking
  • Manage stress
  • Prioritize sleep
  • Move your body regularly
  • Take short walks after meals

These simple habits support digestion, blood sugar balance, and inflammation more than most people realize.

Looking Deeper When Needed

Sometimes symptoms continue even when someone is eating well and making lifestyle changes. In those cases, we may look deeper using advanced lab testing such as the GI-MAP, which evaluates digestion, gut bacteria balance, inflammation, and immune markers that may be affecting gut health and overall wellness.

The body is always communicating. Symptoms like bloating, gas, reflux, constipation, fatigue, and brain fog are not random — they are often signals that the digestive system may need support. Awareness is often the first step toward change.
